WIND SUN SKY SPOTLIGHT: SANTIAGO MATILLA

JOIN US AS WE SPOTLIGHT SOME OF THE

INCREDIBLE TEAM WHO WORK AT WIND SUN SKY

all the future chicken characters holding up the earth

Hi, Santiago Matilla the Associate Production Manager

When I first joined WSS three years ago (!!) I came from a marketing and content creation background and was brought on as the Content Production Manager for Camp Bonkers.

I got to team up with three awesome creators to make some engaging YouTube videos.

In the end we ended up making 500 bits of content for YouTube, never mind the social channels!

I picked up skills along the way, from video editing to making cool multimedia graphics and became kind-of jack of all trades.

Tell us a bit about a project that’s stood out at Wind Sun Sky

Future Chicken! This project has had it all; full episodes, shorts, podcast, and even GIFs!

I have gotten to work on almost every piece of it and it has been incredible to see how much content we’ve made.

What makes it unique, is how much every artist, editor, and animator has been able to put their own personality into all the content.

One thing I’m excited to explore further is developing our motion capture pipeline.

It has a lot of promise, and with more time and development, I’m confident we can create some amazing content at WSS.

Do you have any industry tips or tools that you like to use?

As an Associate Production Manager, efficient processes and workflows are key, especially in a busy environment like Wind Sun Sky.

I like to dive into the nitty-gritty of my team’s work processes. We’ll walk through the entire workflow of editing a particular style of video or animation.

By getting to know each team member, and understanding their strengths, we can plan ahead, save significant time and achieve greater flexibility in managing schedules.

What do you do outside of work?

I consider myself an active person. During the winter I like to play competitive Men’s League soccer in Vancouver and snowboard as often as I can. During the summer I spend a lot of time hiking, camping, and by the beach.

When I am not doing something sporty, you can find me at home playing video games (currently slashing my way through Baldur’s Gate), working on my art or listening to all kinds of music.

Can you share some Workplace memories?

There’s too many to write down, but I have always enjoyed the voice over recording sessions with our Future Chicken cast.

Since it’s a comedy, as well as educational, there’s lots of funny moments and we have a lot of laughs.

Plus, outside of being an Associate Production Manager, you might also see me credited as the voice for some of the characters.

I’ve done a variety of different VO cameos for our Future Chicken project for a bunch of different characters.

From a farting cow, to a glass jar who talks about not eating glass, it’s been a lot of fun.

What advice would you give to someone looking to get into your field?

If you’re looking to break into the industry, consider starting with entry-level positions at studios, such as Production Assistant (PA) roles.

While the role might not align perfectly with your long-term aspirations, they are excellent stepping stones to gain your initial experience.

By working hard and demonstrating initiative, especially by expressing your interest in learning about other areas, you can eventually transition into different departments and roles within the studio.
