A Q&A WITH
EMILIE CURRIE
JOIN US AS WE SPOTLIGHT SOME OF THE
INCREDIBLE TEAM WHO WORK AT WIND SUN SKY
Hi, I’m emilie currie, the associate development manager
And known as the plant enthusiast around the office. At the time of this writing I’ve been at Wind Sun Sky Entertainment for nearly a year!
I initially started out as a day call supporting the team as an on set Assistant Director on some filming days. I guess I made an impression, because shortly after that I was invited to interview for a full-time position.
Tell us a bit about “The Adventures of Team Pom”.
I’m in love with The Adventures of Team Pom. Based off the award-winning graphic novels by Isabel Roxas, this story takes place in Shadyside and is about three quirky and charming girls – Agnes, Ruby, and Roberta – who find common ground in their individuality.
United by their offbeat personalities (and incredibly niche interests) they come together and form a synchronized swimming team – Team Pom.
I really connect with these girls and their adventures because I am somewhat quirky, and it took me time to find my people and feel understood. The themes of acceptance, friendship, and embracing your inner weirdo have really resonated with me.
This project is unique because we’re approaching it in a multitude of ways. In addition to the traditional path of developing a series pitch, we’re also seeding out content on social media.
We’ve built a strategy around specific story moments in the graphic novels. This approach is wonderful because it allows us to showcase Isabel’s incredible artwork.
Through multi-platform story telling we’re building brand awareness, engaging with our audience through immersive content, and generating buzz around the project. In doing so, we’re able to reach a wider audience, create a loyal fan base, and ultimately bring Agnes, Ruby, Roberta, and the rest of Shadyside to life in new ways for current and future fans.
Do you have any industry tips or tools that you like to use?
I’ve been lucky to have some incredible mentors in my corner to offer guidance and support.
I’ve been pushed outside of my comfort zone and have been given the space and opportunity to build my confidence and have learned to trust in my abilities. Their impact has been invaluable, and I’m grateful for their investment in my growth. So, my tip would be – find yourself a good mentor!
What do you do outside of work?
One of my niche interests is plants… In the summer months, you’ll find me around my patio admiring the flowers, or volunteering at the community garden in my neighbourhood. In the winter, I’m a menace to my many, many houseplants, poking, prodding, and looking for new growth.
I also enjoy reading, writing, baking, and spending time in nature.
Can you share some Workplace memories?
I remember writing a particularly riveting email about a spreadsheet one time…. Just kidding.
One of my favourite work accomplishments was when I wrote a script for a character moment to introduce Team Pom. It was a perfect opportunity to immerse myself further in the world and bring my writing talents (which have previously been developed solely on my personal time) into my work.
The process of receiving notes from executives and incorporating them into new versions of script was the first experience I had that made me feel like a proper screenwriter.
Now we’re working on the animation, and its crazy to see something that started as an idea in my head get brought to life by other creative people.
That’s what’s amazing about working in a creative field – it’s all about collaboration and seeing how other people’s talents and ideas shape the final product.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get into your field?
Getting out there and meeting people is crucial, even when it’s tough.
Networking can open doors to new opportunities, and a simple LinkedIn message can lead to unexpected connections. Stay curious, too! You might have a clear career path in mind, or you might be figuring it out as you go.
Either way, it’s worth exploring how all the different parts of a production fit together, what different roles entail, and how the industry works from a business perspective. You never know what you might learn or how it might help you down the line.
Ask people about their jobs, what they love and hate, and how they got where they are. You might just discover a new passion or gain a fresh perspective on the industry. And who knows, those conversations might lead to something amazing!
In a non-job-related vein: I like to keep track of accomplishments and positive feedback – it’s easy to get caught up in what’s not working and lose sight of what is.
That’s why I keep an album on my camera roll called “Warm Fuzzies” where I save screenshots of kind words I receive. Even a simple “good note” makes the cut!
This can be helpful when looking for jobs, because it shows you what other people notice and appreciate about your work. And on the flip side, if you notice someone doing something awesome, don’t forget to give them a shoutout and acknowledge their hard work and good ideas.
